TheoftensurrealisticdescriptionoftheNarrator’sinexorabledescentthroughtheseedybarsandnightclubsofHongKong,ofhisnumerousencounterswithdance-girlsandhisevermoredesperateboutsofdrinking,iscounterpointedbyaseriesofwide-rangingliteraryessays,analysingtheChineseclassicaltradition,thepopularcultureofChinaandtheWest,andthemodernistmovementinWesternandChineseliterature.
TheambianceofHongKongintheearly1960sisgraphicallyevokedinthispowerfulandpoignantnovel,whichtakesthereadertotheveryheartofHongKong.HongKongdirectorFreddieWongmadeafinefilmversionofthenovelin2004.
